Day 6: Free Verse

Inspired by Amy LV

I decided to write about teaching. There have been many posts and reports about teachers this week and it has made me realize several things.

One is that I am lucky to have my job. I am so lucky. I am in a district that cares so much for me. I feel like my needs and wants are met, which means the needs and wants of my students are met. I feel respected as a teacher in my community and my school.

Another thing I realized is that I love being a teacher and it’s because I don’t just love my subject. I love what I get to do at school. I get to meet some amazing people, both students and adults. I get to watch my students grow. I get to help people every day.

I did not grow up thinking I would be a teacher and I am not really sure how I stumbled into deciding to be one, but it’s what I was meant to do.

And now onto my poem.

Enjoy.

Oh, I love this. I want to share it with all my teacher friends.
    “I build relationships.
    I listen.
    I care.”
Love seeing your notebook pages. Mine are so messy that I could never share them.

Well, thank you! You may share all you want. I think I have realize that relationships is my “thing” with teaching. It is my end goal. And, some of my notebook pages are worse haha but these markers are erasable. Best purchase ever! (Or it would be a much biggger mess.)

I’m sure you’ve seen Taylor Mali’s poem “What Teachers Make.” Your poem reminded me of it. I echo your sentiments. I haven’t always loved my district, but it is a very pleasant place to work these days, and my building admin is wonderful. My brother works in the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma district, so I hear lots about Oklahoma teachers.

I am going to have to look that poem up! I have not heard of it. It breaks my heart some of the things I am hearing.

I love hearing from those that have been teaching as many years as you have that they still love it. That is so inspiring. I hope I feel the same after 20!

What I’m hearing about those teachers who are protesting is tragic, the ancient textbooks, etc. I would hope that all teachers would be respected within their jobs as you feel you are. I love the ending of your poem, nice!

It breaks my heart what I am hearing too! I am so lucky where I am, but I know not all of us are equally as lucky. I wish and hope it changes. Thank you for your kind words.

I have hope that it will. It has to! Teachers are speaking out, students are speaking out, and others are as well. It’s amazing how many I have seen post in support. I have to have hope.

The end of your poem flips that rotten old saying on its behind – Amen! I love teachers and am so grateful for mine and for those of our children and for all of the children and adults I love and will never know. Thank you! For the words and for your love of learning and passing it on in so many ways. xx

Such a kind comment. Thank you! Thank you for your inspiration. I am learning so much about myself, my passions, and what I can do through writing a poem a day! (Even though I am a little behind.)
