It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

Time to reflect and share the books I read last week and what I hope to read this week. Make sure to visit the IMWAYR hosts Unleashing Readers and Teach Mentor Texts to find other blogs to follow that use this weekly wrap up.

For this week, I did a reading challenge to read for as long as I was on my phone the previous week…which was 44 hours and 49 minutes-an average of 6 hours and 24 minutes a day. Watch my newest episode on my YouTube channel for specifics, but that is really why I read so much! I didn’t meet my goal, but I did read a lot and that’s what is important!

Books I Finished

Middle Grade

I Am KaviI Am Kavi by Thushanthi Ponweera
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What a stunning historical fiction book in verse! I loved how Thushanthi was able to weave a story illustrating civil war in Sri Lanka as well as a story of a teenage girl living and making my mistakes, but also growing and loving. I loved watching Kavi grow throughout the book. The poetry was also really beautiful-I highlighted many lines!

HazardHazard by Frances O’Roark Dowell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What a heart wrenching story of war, PTSD, and anger. I really enjoyed how Frances used text messages and emails to tell the story (and poetry) and how there were prompts in it that the main character, Hazard, had to process and write about. I think this would make a great book for discussion groups and as a mentor text.

Option Pile

I am going to do a challenge this week where I try to read as many Book of the Month books as I can! I always order at least one book each month and then just never read them…which isn’t terrible but also, I could do better.

Three Book of the Month books are on my 30 books in 3 months challenge, so I’ll start with those. And then if I finish those, I will move on to the other unread books!

Reading Challenge: 30 books in 3 months

I have read 5 of my 30 books! Still not great, but hopefully adding 3 to that total this week.

The books in color are finished:

Please comment what you’ve been reading. I would love to hear it.
