Mini Review: That’s For Babies by Jackie Azua Kramer and Illustrated by Lisa Brandenburg

Jackie Azua Kramer sent this ARC to me to share with my students and the Lit Review Crew.

Here is what I loved:

  • The title, “That’s For Babies,” resonates so much with me as a mom of a six year old. I am always being told how grown up she is and that she is not a baby…this book is meant for readers her age struggling with that balance of growing up and what that means.
  • Pru’s appearance being more gender-neutral. I think more readers can identify with Pru without assigning a gender to what she is saying.
  • Pru’s parents saying “Pru, we know you’re a big girl…but if Sally or you are ever scared, you can always sleep in our bad.” This is great advice for parents to show that you can acknowledge how your child feels and yet give them advice that you know they need.
  • The overall message and what it could teach readers. I know if I read this to my students, we could discuss the struggles they face as middle schoolers and being torn between being a child and a teenager. It is hard growing up and knowing what it means and having those discussions would be very powerful.

Thank you Jackie for sharing this book with the Lit Review Crew. It is off on its next adventure and reader.

Happy reading.
