IMWAYR (Actually it’s Tuesday…but don’t tell anyone) August 1, 2023

The week was a busy one-full of daughter time, so no complaints there. Here’s a look at what I did read, my thoughts, and where to hear more about my reading and writing life.

Make sure to visit the IMWAYR hosts Unleashing Readers and Teach Mentor Texts to find other blogs to follow that use this weekly wrap up.

Books Read

Young Adult

NimonaNimona by N.D. Stevenson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When I heard there was a Netflix adaptation I immediately went to reread! I love this comic-it’s funny, it’s full of heart, and is a great action! Nimona is a fierce character and I want more of her!

I categorized Nimona as YA because of violence and blood…but it really is okay for most ages-it just depends on preference.

The JumpThe Jump by Brittney Morris
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved Slay, so I was really excited to see another book from Brittney! I loved the multiple POVs and how each character was so unique. The audiobook had different narrators for each, which I found really helpful and brought the story to life. I was looking for a book with substance and this one had it while also being entertaining and heart-thumping.

Forever Is NowForever Is Now by Mariama J. Lockington
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Mariama is one of my favorite middle grade authors and I love that she wrote a young adult book! This was a novel in verse full of emotions-you will FEEL in this book. The anxiety portrayed was spot on-I highlighted so many places I identified with. I also like that there was a diverse cast of characters and all of the things that happened felt natural and real. This book will make you feel mad, angry, hopeful, and in love.

Adult

Sybil: The Classic True Story of a Woman Possessed by Sixteen PersonalitiesSybil: The Classic True Story of a Woman Possessed by Sixteen Personalities by Flora Rheta Schreiber
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

So this book is something…it is a fascinating story, but there is some controversy surrounding Sybil and if she really had the 16 personalities or if she faked it. There are also concerns of her being taking advantage of by the author and her daughter. I did still find the book intriguing, although it dragged in a lot of places and I had to skim a bit.

I am going to read Sybil Exposed soon…just to see. Would love to see others’ thoughts!

Age of ViceAge of Vice by Deepti Kapoor
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is an important one. I enjoyed learning about society in New Delhi and I found the mentions of homelessness hitting quite close to home as the US is currently having conversations on what to do with people camping in cities. The things I enjoyed most about this book were the multiple points of view, the real-feeling characters that I rooted for but also disappointed me, and the families.

Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them AllThirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All by Laura Ruby
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A great literary piece told in a ghost’s point of view. I liked how there were multiple stories, but they all connected. It’s hard to describe this book without spoiling, so just know that it is one that will immerse you in a world that will break your heart. But, it is full of hope and beauty as well.

Option Pile and Goals for the Week

I have a quite a few books I am currently reading, so I hope to wrap some of those up before I move on to new books. I am reading Battle Dragons City of Speed with my daughter and we are almost finished. Also, I am really close to finishing Divine Rivals, so that will be done soon. Illuminae is one I am reading as an audiobook but with the physical one close by as it has multimedia in the book. Inheritance Games started as an audiobook but I am not a fan of the narrator, so I got a copy from the library to read instead.

Here is my 30 in 3 months update. I am working on Work in Progress right now and hope to also read another off this list this week.
